Retrieval practice is a learning strategy that was developed by cognitive scientists and is based on the act of recalling information after exposure. Although dozens of studies have demonstrated meaningful learning advantages with retrieval practice, most educators and students are not familiar with the strategy. The purpose of this presentation is to share five studies in which our lab found that retrieval practice resulted in superior learning when compared to more commonly‐used strategies such as reading/rereading. These advantages included superior recall and a greater ability to synthesize complex information that is typically found in anatomy & physiology, structural kinesiology and exercise physiology courses.
