While much is known about how ribosomes faithfully translate mRNAs into protein, how ribosomes are assembled within cells remains poorly understood. With ~ 2,000 ribosomes synthesized every minute ribosome assembly is the major metabolic activity of a growing cell. Given its profound energy requirements, ribosome assembly is tightly regulated in response to extracellular stimuli. In addition to providing sufficient numbers of ribosomes, cells must also ensure that the produced ribosomes are correctly assembled. This is important to safeguard their catalytic activity and extraordinary fidelity. We are exploring cellular mechanisms to ensure proper assembly of nascent 40S subunits.
