Individual Development Plans (IDPs) are tools to assist in the establishment of career goals and identification of professional development needs to achieve those goals. IDPs are also intended to facilitate discussions between mentors and mentees about career goals, professional planning, and skills development. In October 2014, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) implemented a policy based on the 2012 recommendations proposed by the Biomedical Research Workforce Working Group Report of the Advisory Committee to the Director encouraging use of IDPs by graduate students and postdoctoral trainees and requiring reporting of this information in research progress reports. This presentation will highlight the benefits for IDP use for individual trainees, faculty members, and training program administrators, with specific emphasis on how trainees can use the information from their IDP to initiate thoughtful discussions about different career paths.
