The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of extract of yacon leaves (EYL) on body weight, biochemical parameters (glucose and total cholesterol) and TNF in plasma of STZ‐diabetic rats. Forty male rats were divided into four groups ( n =10): C: control; DM: STZ rats; DM+Y: STZ rats + Yacon leaves and C+Y: control rats + yacon leaves. DM1 was induced by streptozotocin (40mg/kg, i.p.). Yacon (100mg/weight/day) was administrated by gavage for 30 days. There was no difference in total cholesterol (C=58,54±6,62; DM=53,72±10,23; DM+Y=55,94±7,99; C+Y=50,50±7,22) and TNF (C=28,59±12,69; DM=23,68±14,99; DM+Y=25,48±5,77; C+Y=36,22±15,58). The final body weight was higher in C group compared to DM but no difference between the other groups (C=380,5±34,74; DM=331,1±53,76; DM+Y=332,11±16,13; C+Y=357,33±39,32). Initial glucose (C=128±5,86; DM=416,11±61,62; DM+Y=410,1±72,56; C+Y=119,6±4,24) was higher in DM and DM+Y, EYL decreased final glucose levels in DM+Y rats and showed higher in untreated group (C=94±6,37; DM=299,75±114,64; DM+Y=109,71±15,14; C+Y=88,66±5,63). In conclusion EYL decreased glucose levels in treated diabetic group (DM+Y). Since chronic hyperglycemia plays a major role in diabetes complications, reducing this initial trigger is a beneficial result.
