Learning about “self” theories (self‐efficacy, self‐determination, self‐worth) can shed light on skills and motivation for career satisfaction and opportunity. Working in industry, a funding agency and academia have taught me skills that I value. There have been people with whom I've worked that have helped me learn how to work better with others. As teachers and researchers, much of our work focuses on developing others, which is laudable. This presentation focuses on self‐awareness of our own development and ways we can use the “self” theories for intentional development of intrinsic motivation in areas that we may avoid. The outcomes of the presentation is for each of us to identify a skill or insight we learned in a recent situation, identify a skill we would like to learn with a plan to learn that skill, and identify a growth opportunity for someone else that we can provide.
