Coenzyme Q10 But Not Resveratrol Protects Against the Sequelae of Myocardial Infarction: Profoundly Reduces Infarct Area, Inflammation, and Oxidative Stress; Normalizes Hemodynamics; and Recommences Homeostatic Apoptosis

Aim To determine the protective effect of solo or combined pre‐administration of resveratrol (RES) and coenzyme Q10 (Co Q10) against experimental induced MI. Methods: Male Wistar rats were randomly divided into the following six groups (n= 10 for each group) as follows: control without surgery, sham surgery without MI, MI group pretreated with normal saline, MI pretreated with RES alone (20 mg/kg, orally), MI group pretreated with Co Q10 alone (20 mg/kg, i.m.) and MI group pretreated with combined RES and Co Q10. Respective pretreatment was commenced 7 days prior to the permanent occlusion of the left anterior descending (LAD) coronary artery. MI was confirmed by the ST elevation. Twenty‐four hours post‐MI induction, hemodynamics parameters, inflammation markers, oxidative stress markers, apoptotic gene expression, brain neturitic peptide (BNP), size of infarct area, and histopathological assessment were carried out in left ventricular (LV) homogenates. Results: , CoQ10 reduced infract size, improve hemodynamic parameters, decreased serum levels of LV Inflammatory Markers. Furthermore, only with CoQ10, all apoptotic markers mRNA levels return to their normal levels. Our biochemical, molecular and pathological data indicates absence of any protective effect of RES against LAD ligation induced MI; when either used solo or in combination with CoQ10. Conclusion Coenzyme Q10 but not resveratrol protects against the sequelae of myocardial infarction and the addition of RES as a combined treatment doesn't improve the effect ofCoQ10.
