Dietary and Physical Activity Factors in Overweight and Obese Adolescents At Risk for Type 2 Diabetes

Objective Overweight youth are at increased risk for prediabetes, characterized by elevated plasma glucose concentrations that do not reach the threshold for type 2 diabetes (T2D). Modifiable risk factors include dietary and physical activity behaviors which impact glycemia. As part of a pilot and feasibility study to prevent T2D via a lifestyle intervention, we aim to evaluate baseline dietary and physical activity factors and examine how these factors are related to measures of glycemia. Methods: Eligible participants are overweight youth (body mass index [BMI] > 85 th percentile; 10‐21 years). Dietary intake, physical activity and sedentary behavior are assessed using electronic monitoring techniques which have been validated in adolescents (4 days using Technology Assisted Dietary Assessment™ and 7 days using activPAL™, respectively). Glycemic status is assessed during a 2‐hour oral glucose tolerance test . Results: To date, 8 participants (5 females, BMI 29.4‐51.5 kg/m 2 ) have been screened and 4 had prediabetes.
