Background The Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2010 state that Americans should increase their intake of low fat and non‐fat milk and milk products including yogurt. Objective This analysis examines trends in the percentage of US adults who consumed yogurt on a given day from 1999‐2000 through 2011‐2012. Trends were analyzed by sex, race, income, and eating occasion. Design In the 1999‐2012 National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys, cross‐sectional nationally representative samples of the US population, yogurt consumption was collected during a single 24 hour dietary recall interview from 33,932 adults 20 years and older. Results In 1999‐2000, 4.7% ±1.4% (±SE) of adults consumed yogurt on a given day, which increased to 9.3% ±0.7% in 2011‐2012. There were increases in all race/ethnic groups. Among non‐Hispanic whites, there was an increase from 5.3%±1.0% to 10.4%±1.0%; among non‐Hispanic blacks there was an increase from 2.6%±0.9% to 3.9%±0.5% and among Mexican‐Americans there was an increase from 1.9%±0.6% to 6.2%±1.6%. Similarly, increases occurred in the highest income group (5.7%±0.4% in 1999‐2000 to 12.8%±1.2% in 2011‐2012) and the lowest income group (2.6%±0.8% to 5.2%±0.8%). Increases occurred at all eating occasions with the largest increase in the percentage of adults consuming yogurt occurring at breakfast; 1.0%±0.1 in 1999‐2000 to 3.9%±0.4 in 2011‐2012. Conclusions The percentage of US adults consuming yogurt on a given day increased between 1999 and 2012. More adults consumed yogurt at breakfast in 2012 than in 1999.
