The Biochemistry Summer Academy is a 2‐week intensive workshop for in‐service science teachers with emphasis on biochemistry laboratory techniques and molecular modeling. By focusing on the underlying science behind these methods, we enhance the understanding of protein and nucleic acid structures, the nature of the forces maintaining these structures, and the fundamentals of mechanistic enzymology. Through discussions with departmental faculty, participants gain familiarity with topics of current interest. With the pilot program described here, we have established communication between the Department of Biochemistry and local school districts to assist local high school science teachers in their transition into the Next Generation Science Standard (NGSS). Our aim is to develop a program that empowers chemistry and biology science teachers without cross‐disciplinary training to teach biochemistry with authority and enthusiasm while showcasing the interdisciplinary nature of science. We hope that the academy will be a model for other molecular life science programs.
