Evaluating the possible link between nutraceuticals and health is a key goal in nutritional field. This study aimed at understanding the complex effects of some biomarker activities of the retail product Juice Plus+® on clinical outcomes of heavy smokers. To this purpose, a Bayesian Network (BN) model was applied on data coming from a randomized placebo controlled double‐blind study on healthy heavy smokers (Bamonti, JACN 2013). At T0 and after 3 months’ supplementation (T1) pulmonary function and aminothiol status were assessed in 101 healthy heavy smokers (aged 47±8.7, >20 cigarettes/d, duration >10yr) randomized into 3 groups: placebo P, fruit/vegetable FV and fruit/vegetable/berry FVB. Likelihood of obtained networks was estimated via Monte Carlo simulations. Statistical significance was assigned as p value <0.05. T0: the 3 groups did not differ significantly. T1: pulmonary function was unchanged in P, slightly but not significantly improved in FV, significantly improved in FVB. According to BN, no significant interaction was observed in P (network score ‐101.4, p=NS), whereas overall fit improved significantly in FV (‐185.7, p= 0.01) and in FVB (‐293.7, p=0.003) (Figure 1). Pulmonary parameters were definitely related to the biochemical structure only in FV and FVB groups. BN analysis can help understand the complex effects on clinical outcomes and biomarker activities in heavy smokers.
