Many people have a misconception about networking and most view this in a very negative vein. We view networking as an important social skill that all professionals should include in his or her toolkit. Networking is sharing your ideas and passion, listening to your colleagues and their current research, finding new collaborators, and introducing people to one another to make ideas and projects grow. There are many resources available about networking online but many researchers feel confused and conflicted towards social media and lack sufficient information or guidance, particularly for those at the beginning of their careers. The importance of networking and issues and strategies used when trying to promote your own work and careers will be the focus of this session. To better familiarize researchers with existing Internet resources, we will discuss prospective benefits that can stem from online science conversations and interactions and explain how engineers and scientists can efficiently and effectively use online resources. Understanding scientific networks and how to use them, how to develop your web presence, or brand, and how to exploit these sites will be the emphasized. The theme will be that successful careers in engineering and science just don’t happen襃. they are crafted!
