Individuals with metabolic syndrome are at increased risk for cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. Dietary intake behavior influences metabolic risk factors. This study aimed to investigate the association between breakfast consumption and metabolic syndrome in working age population. Metabolic syndrome was diagnosed based on NCEP ATP III guideline. The information on dietary intake behavior was obtained from questionnaires. Blood biochemical parameters, blood pressure, waist circumference were collected. There were 163 males and 210 females participating in this study. The results showed that the people who skipped breakfast had more risks of large waist circumference, high blood glucose level, high blood triglyceride level, than those who ate breakfast daily. However, the level of blood high‐density lipoprotein cholesterol in breakfast skippers was lower, compared to that of breakfast eaters. In conclusion, this study showed that breakfast consumption was an important factor influencing the development of metabolic syndrome in working age population. Therefore, breakfast consumption should be encouraged to reduce the risk of metabolic syndrome.
