An honor society acknowledging students who demonstrate excellence in community service/ outreach/volunteerism has been established at Samuel Merritt University. This honor society was developed from the observance that although most institutions recognize outstanding academic performance, students who have the ability to volunteer their time and maintain good academic standing should be recognized as well. Students are required to self‐enroll onto the online community service webpage. The webpage is an online course management system called Canvas that has been designed to serve 2 major purposes: 1. To announce upcoming community service opportunities, and 2. Create a method to track and record community service hours. Upon enrollment, students view and sign up for the upcoming outreach activities. After completion of the service activity, students submit a self‐reflection online to receive credit. Prior to graduation, students apply to be accepted into the honor society and several criteria are used to evaluate the student’s performance. Students can use the information saved on the community service website to aid in applying for scholarships, grants, residencies, and employment.
