From pencil and paper, to chalk and chalkboard, to transparencies and overhead projectors, to Microsoft PowerPoint and computers with HDTV, to the Internet and beyond, technology has played a major, symbiotic role in the innovation of pedagogy. Many technologies have advanced pedagogy, but it can be argued that pedagogies have also advanced technologies. Whether technologically advanced or simplistic in design, teaching innovations have the same goal: to advance the effectiveness and efficiency of the learning process. Some innovations are tailored to a specific, in‐home audience, but others may be appropriate for translational education, which we define as the commercialization of educational tools for a public audience. We discuss our experience with developing technological and non‐technological innovative methods over the past 20 years that have helped to transform traditional gross anatomy and histology pedagogy to an interactive flipped‐classroom style; and we share our decision making process in determining which innovations should be published and which should be registered for possible commercial distribution.
