Today’s political, economic and health realities present significant opportunity to shape the United States health care system so that it provides better care to more people at reasonable cost. To sustain such improvements in health care, academic health centers must train future health professionals differently. For example, physicians trained in a model that emphasizes autonomy and hierarchy will find it difficult to practice patient‐centered medicine in a high‐functioning health care team. In recognition of the needs of future physicians, many of our nation’s medical schools and teaching hospitals are implementing innovative programs that promote the importance of interprofessional collaboration and team‐based health care. Dr. Kirch will highlight some of these innovations and discuss additional educational initiatives, including ways in which interprofessional education can reshape our approach to basic sciences and our teaching of anatomy, to ensure an adequate supply of future‐oriented health professionals.
