Quercetin attenuates induction of COX‐2 in rats subjected to acute unilateral ureteral obstruction (1096.8)

In response to acute unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO) inflammatory processes initiates. The aim of this study is to evaluate whether quercetin, a natural occurring bioflavonoid, have anti‐inflammatory and protective functions in the kidney during acute UUO. Rats were subjected to 24 hour UUO and quercetin was administrated IP at a dose of 50mg/kg/day, and functional parameters as well as immunoblotting and QPCR was performed for inflammatory markers, including COX‐2 and IL‐1β and the oxidative stress marker heme‐oxygenase‐1 (HO‐1). Kidney weight as well as plasma creatinine and urea were increased in response to 24h UUO. Quercetin administration reduces the increased plasma urea level, while kidney weight and plasma creatinine were not affected. COX‐2 and HO‐1 expression were increased in inner medulla in rats subjected to UUO, quercetin attenuates this induction. IL‐1β was induced in UUO rats, however, treatment with quercetin further increase IL‐1β mRNA level. Taken together, data demonstrated that quercetin play a role for the regulation of COX‐2 in response to acute UUO.
