High student engagement is closely correlated with student success. This is not optimized in the traditional classroom utilizing lecture‐based delivery methods. The use of laptops and other mobile presents unique opportunities, such as when interfaced with the interactive polling software, LectureTools which allows for a creative, versatile two‐way interaction between student and instructor in real time. It also provides a rich source of data to be used for assessing individual and group performance. In this study, LectureTools was used by instructors for information delivery and the students for a specifically designed presentation. A questionnaire surveying students on their use of laptops and mobile devices in the classroom and the impact of LectureTools on learning outcomes was administered at the end of the semester. In addition, students were interviewed on a one‐on‐one basis. Results indicate that LectureTools is effective in facilitating student participation and enhancing their understanding of lecture content.
