In collaboration with Pulse Canada, Grains & Legumes Nutrition Council Australia and CICILS/IPTIC, the American Pulse Association has successfully achieved the designation by the United Nations of 2016 as the International Year of Pulses (IYP). Pulse crops, which include dry beans, dry peas, lentils and chickpeas, are rich in protein, essential micronutrients and phytochemicals and are integral parts of the diets of people around the world. Efforts are underway to organize events and activities of the IYP for 2016. Strategic planning details of the Health, Nutrition & Food Security and Sustainability & Production working groups will be shared, and the potential impact of the IYP on new global health and nutrition research and funding opportunities will be presented.
