Corn Peptide Ingestion with Exercise Attenuate Body Fat Mass and Enhance Lean Body Mass in obese rats

Obesity is a serious health problem. Moreover, Loss of lean mass also is a problem caused by negative energy balance. Thus, the treatment of obesity requires both the reduction of fat and maintenance of lean mass. Corn peptides (CP) were shown to decrease body fat and increase lean mass in animal studies. DIO rats were randomly divided into five groups, DIO, DIO+Casein, DIO+CP, DIO+exercise(Ex) and DIO+CP+Ex group(n=8/group). Supplement of CP and Casein(200g/kg diet) and Ex (Treadmill running in 15 m/min for 60 min/d, 5d/wk) protocol executed for 4 wk. Perirenal fat and soleus were harvested and western blotting was used for phosphorylations of p70S6k and rpS6. Compared with DIO Control, CP or Casein dietary has no significantly effect on body weight(BW) (p>;0.05), BW was attenuated by CP+Ex in the beginning of the 2 th wk(p<0.05). BW was significantly reduced by Ex just in the 4 th wk (p<0.05). Compared with DIO Control, perirenal fat mass index in DIO+CP+Ex group has a significant decrease (P<0.05) and soleus mass index has a significant increase(P<0.05). Phospho‐p70S6k (Thr389) and phospho‐rpS6 (Ser235/Ser236) in soleus were significantly higher in DIO+CP+Ex, but not in CP or Casein supplementation. CP+Ex had a BW reduction effect by lowering adipose tissue and improving lean body mass in DIO rats. These novel findings indicate that a CP‐enriched diet may potentially enhance growth of muscle.
