There is little information on the extent to which different challenged populations with high rates of overweight and obesity have interest in participating in weight management programs. The purpose of this study was to indentify potential rates of enrollment in a weight management program among adult US military dependants. We conducted a cross‐sectional survey in adult dependants (N=198; mean ±SD, age =34±8 years, BMI =25.5±5.5 kg/m 2 ) of US active duty military personnel (ADMP). Responses to a self‐administered questionnaire on demographics and level of interest in a weight management program were assessed. Of the respondents 93% were female and 7% were male; 45% of the dependant's ADMP were officers and 55% were enlisted. There was a strong effect of current weight status on interest in participation, with 71% of obese individuals, 54% of overweight and only 10% of underweight “very likely” to participate (χ 2 =6.737, p<0.05).BMI (kg/m 2 ) N=195 N (%) Likelihood to Participate by BMI Category Very Likely (%) Moderately Likely (%) Not Likely (%)<18.5 10 (5) 10 30 60 18.5 – 24.9 93 (48) 38 39 23 25–29.9 54 (28) 54 32 15 ≥ 30 38 (20) 71 26 3These data suggest that there is widespread interest in participation in a weight management program among adult dependents of ADMP who are overweight or obese.
