¡Por Vida! (PV) is a healthy menu logo and recognition program originally developed for restaurants in 2010 but expanded to institutional food services in 2011. This study objective was to compare PV implementation across these two settings. Data collected included an environmental assessment, patron awareness survey, and key informant interviews. Participants included key stakeholders, 5 restaurant brands with locations throughout the city,5 institutions, and patrons at participating institutions and restaurants. Results from the patron survey suggest that visibility of the PV logo was important in food selection; however, 58.5% of institutional patrons saw the logo when ordering, but 87% indicated no impact on food choice. Of restaurant patrons seeing the logo, 74.6% selected PV items. The environmental assessment indicated a variety of marketing techniques in both settings and frequency of marketing techniques across all sites were observed. Greater frequency of the PV logo and supporting information was observed in the institutional settings. Lastly, restaurant stakeholders indicated a need for more information of the PV program. Both settings requested additional training and support. Institutions reported initiating their own PV promotions. In conclusion, positive findings were observed in both settings; key differences were observed in implementation, marketing, and patron behavior.
