Steroid composition in wound healing preparations from the skin of the Arabian Gulf catfish ( Arius Bilineatus, Val. )

The Arabian Gulf catfish elaborates viscous proteinaceous material when threatened or injured. The viscous material contains 84% proteins 13.4% lipids and 2.6% nucleic acid components of its dry weight. Both lipids and proteins contain highly biologically active components. Preparations from the skin of the catfish were shown to accelerate wound healing in animals and humans. In order to understand the role of the preparations in inflammatory as well as anti‐inflammatory actions in the healing processes, the steroidal contents in the preparations were studied. The following steroids were found in catfish skin preparations (CSP) by separation on column chromatography and TLC, then identification by the use of GC/MS: (1) Cholest‐2,4‐diene; (2) Cholesta‐4,6‐diene‐3‐ol (3β); (3) Cholest‐3,5‐diene; (4) Cholest‐5,22‐dien‐3‐ol (3β); (5) Cholesterol; (6) 3β‐hydroxy‐cholest‐5‐en‐7‐one; (7) Cholest‐4‐en‐3‐one; (8) Cholest‐5‐en‐3β‐nonanoate; (9) Cholest‐4,6‐dien‐3‐ one; (10) Progesterone; (11) Ergosta‐5,24‐dien‐3β‐ol. Squalene and tocopherol were also discovered in the neutral lipids fraction. The roles of these steroids in the fish skin as well as in the wound healing processes are not yet known, but they may contribute to the anti‐inflammatory activities of the preparations.
