It is well known that patients with severe mental illness often have metabolic alterations and therefore can develop co‐morbidities, which reduce their life expectancy compared with general population. In addition, they intake drugs that induce overweight and obesity, which is a risk factor for diseases such as metabolic syndrome. Objective Identify the association between overweight and obesity with consumption of psychotropic drugs in patients in long‐stay units (1A and 1B) from Psychiatric Hospital “Dr. Samuel Ramirez Moreno”. Results 17.8% and 8.3% of patients had obesity in units 1A and 1B, respectively. Additionally, the BMI was similar in both groups and there was no relationship between BMI and number of psychotropic drugs consumed. Before indicates that dietary management is effective in the control BMI of patients, despite having predisposing factor to obesogenics psychoactive drugs, suggesting lower risk of developing co‐morbidities. Conclusions Psychiatric patients units 1A and 1B, have an incidence of overweight and obesity lower than the national average.
