Human mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) is subject to large‐scale deletions. A deletion of 4977 bp called the “common deletion” makes cells viable but energetically compromised. We compared lymphoblast cell lines in which the deletion was either undetectable or at levels of ~7%. These cells were treated with X‐rays with doses up to 5Gy. Levels of total mtDNA and mtDNA bearing the Common Deletion were measured by real‐time PCR.
