The University of Louisville recently initiated a program to recruit, educate and motivate outstanding undergraduate and health professional students to pursue further training and careers in cancer research. We received over 50 applications and funded 28 participants in the first year. The final section included 11 medical, 2 dental, 1 graduate and 14 undergraduate students. Over 60% were female and over 30% were African‐American. Each of the students completed the curriculum and a cancer research project. All of the students presented research posters and prizes were awarded to the top students and their mentors in both the professional and undergraduate student categories. A blinded and electronic survey of the student participants was performed to assess participant interest in cancer research before and after completing this year's program. The survey was evaluated on a likert scale of 1) poor; 2) could be better; 3) neutral; 4) good; and 5) excellent. Aggregate evaluation scores (Mean ± SEM; n=23) increased significantly (p=0.0092) following completion of the program (4.30 ± 0.17) compared to the scores from the same participants at entrance (3.57 ± 0.21). The evaluation score for the overall program experience was 4.26 ± 0.24. The program was an excellent vehicle for recruitment into the pharmacology and toxicology graduate program.
