Intestinal bacteria contribute to the overall host (human) metabolism, and the microbiome (profile of microorganisms that inhabit the human body) is a multidimensional system. Several factors have been identified in the development of the microbiome, and evidence suggests that exposures to environmental factors (including diet) at various time points in life may play a pivotal role in the development of the adult human microbiome. The objective of this study was to evaluate the current microbiome in adults in relation to their residential history. Thirty‐one adults completed an in‐person interview to ascertain, at all points in life, residence locations in which they lived at least three months. In addition, participants completed a 4‐day food record, and provide a fecal sample. The gut microbiome was characterized from the fecal samples using 454 pyrosequencing. RDP10 was used for taxonomic classification of bacteria. In individuals who had never lived outside of the United States, abundance of Bacteroides ranged from 7 to 68% and of Prevotella ranged from 0 to 49%. In individuals who had lived outside of the United States for at least three months at any time in their life, abundance of Bacteroides ranged from 0 to 17% and of Prevotella from 0 to 63%. These results suggest which bacteria have dominant abundance is related to residential history, particularly having lived outside of the United States.
