This presentation will discuss challenges that women, and increasingly also the “new” men, face in combining the goals for a rewarding life in science and a rewarding family life. The path to success on both fronts is not always straight and often quite difficult, but always exhilarating. Personal examples will be provided to illustrate certain choices and priorities one can make at crucial steps in career development to achieve success. Responsibilities of the society and employers in academia, government or industry to support that effort will be discussed and specific suggestions made. The conclusion will be made that even under still highly unfavorable conditions, many women are successfully combining their professional and personal lives to the benefit of the society and to great personal satisfaction. They are also reaching positions of leadership and authority that should empower them to force societal changes that will make the same road they traveled a little less bumpy for the next generation.
