Analytic view of simultaneous occurrence of sacralisation and congenital anomalies

Lumbar and coccygeal sacralisation may be defined as fusion of fifth lumbar vertebra with first sacral vertebra at the cranial end and apex of sacrum with first coccygeal vertebra at the caudal end respectively. The modulated mutation of HOX11and PAX1/9 families caused defective sacralisation with simultaneous occurrence of anomalies in organs like hindlimb, forelimb, thymus, parathyroid etc in mice. Therefore an attempt has been made to extend the study of sacralisation and associated anomalies from mice to men by conceiving a Hypothesis to be established by future experimentation. 66 dry human sacra were studied in the Osteology laboratory of CSM Medical University Lucknow, UP, India. The defective sacra were genetically analysed and corroborated with experimental results from mice. These sacra were correlated with the mutation of the HOX11and PAX1/9 genes expression and complemented with the associated anomalies as in mice.
