Our objective was to determine whether wealth as measured through a common set of indicators of assets or as measured through the use of the Progress out of Poverty Index (PPI) was positively associated with food security in four countries. We used data from over 9000 participants from previous studies conducted in Peru, Bolivia, Mali, and India that used an adapted version of the US Household Food Security Scale. Additionally, various wealth indicators were captured for each location. Factors associated with food security included PPI score, savings, income, education and assets (e.g., TV, electricity and number of rooms in home, etc.). However, the effect and significance of these factors varied by location. Food security appears to be strongly associated with a variety of wealth indicators, but the indicators of influence are not consistent across countries. Efforts to better understand how changes in wealth and assets impact food security are needed.
