Effect of the supplementation of Prunus mume concentrates on lipid peroxide levels and antioxidative enzyme activities in hyperlipidemic rats

This study was performed to investigate the effect of the supplementation of Prunus mume concentrates on lipid peroxide levels and antioxidative enzyme, SOD activities in hyperlipidemic rats. Thirty Sprague‐Dawley male rats aging 7weeks were fed the high fat diet (HFD, 15% beef tallow+1% cholesterol) for 4weeks. Thereafter the rats were devided into 3 dietary groups and fed the experimental diet for 4weeks; HFD+0% Prunus mume concentrate diet(HFD+0PM), HFD+1% Prunus mume concentrate diet(HFD+1PM) and HFD+2% Prunus mume concentrate diet(HFD+2PM). Then the rats were sacrificed to get blood and liver. The body weight and food intake were not significantly different among groups. Serum levels of total lipid, total cholesterol, triglyceride of HFD+2PM were significantly lower than those of HFD+0PM. Serum HDL‐cholesterol was significantly higher in HFD+2PM than HFD+0PM. Atherogenic index was significantly lower in HFD+2PM than HFD+0PM. Serum LDL‐cholesterol was not significantly different among groups but tend to be lower in HFD+2PM. TBARS, conjugated diene levels were not significantly different among groups but tend to be lower in HFD+2PM. Liver SOD activity was significantly higher in HFD+2PM than HFD+0PM. From these results, it is suggested that the supplementation of Prunus mume concentrates improve blood lipid profiles and increase antioxidative status in hyperlipidemic rats.
