Weight loss maintenance (WLM) is critical for long‐term health, yet difficult to sustain. Methods to qualitatively explore facilitators and barriers to WLM in premenopausal women with overweight/obesity will be described. Women will be recruited from an original, 18‐wk randomized clinical trial that promoted WL via an energy‐restricted diet that included one sugar‐free cocoa beverage and two dark chocolate snacks/d (n= 30) or one sugar‐free non‐cocoa beverage and two licorice snacks/d (n=30). In this follow‐up study, success with WLM will be explored. Three focus groups of 3–5 women/group will be conducted. Focus groups will be guided by a facilitator using open‐ended questions and probes. Topics for questions will include perceptions of snacking, WL and WLM success, self‐efficacy, stages of change, and facilitators/barriers to WLM. Focus groups will be held in a private room and tape‐recorded. Phenomenologic analysis will be used to evaluate transcripts and will be independently coded by two investigators. Common themes will be identified. Women will complete questionnaires to gather demographic data. Descriptive statistics will be used to characterize women. Findings are expected to provide insight into development of future interventions that facilitate WLM in premenopausal women.
