The jaw of Japanese newts Cynops pyrrhogaster could be fully reproduced following amputation including tooth germ. Cynops pyrrhogaster are polyphyodont and series of teeth germ have developed in their jaws. We hypothesize that the sequential developed tooth germ are induced by Thyroid hormone and its receptor network. We examined Thyroid hormone receptor(THR) gene expression in Cynops pyrrhogaster tooth from gdentine matrix formation and mineralization stage h to genameloid maturation and enamel‐like matrix formation stage h by in situ hybridization histochemistry. We demonstrated THR mRNA to be localized predominantly in the coronal side of odontoblasts at gdentine matrix formation and mineralization stage h. Histochemical analyses revealed the THR expression in odontoblasts and surrounding tissues were dependent on the stage of tooth development.
