The ability to get a message across to others and to convey specific thoughts and ideas effectively is becoming increasingly important as our communities become more interconnected. Despite the growing emphasis placed upon good communication skills, many scientists, educators and students continue to grapple with how best to engage their audience. There are multiple drivers for developing effective communication skills, including capturing the attention and interest of the audience, avoiding miscommunication and achieving the desired goal. Communicating successfully, whether in verbal or written format, therefore relies on three main steps: 1 ‐ identifying the audience, 2 ‐ defining what they need to know and why, and 3 ‐ delivering the message appropriately and effectively. Developing the skills and expertise necessary to follow such a strategy should enable specialists to engage and interact with each other as well as the non‐specialists, capitalise on any opportunities that present themselves and ensure that any message is not misinterpreted.
