Summer temperatures in northwestern México reach as high as 50°C. An experiment was conducted with 12 pigs (27.3 ± 1.92 kg, BW) to determine if severe heat stress modify the expression of Hsp90, GLUT4, AA transporter b 0,+ , and leptin, which participate in the regulation of nutrient metabolism and feed intake of animals. Treatments (T) were: T1, pigs housed at 22°C (Comfort); T2, pigs under heat stress (HS, 44°C). Pigs were fed a wheat‐soybean meal diet (16% CP, 0.95% Lys). At the end of the 21‐d trial, pigs were euthanized to collect liver and adipose tissue samples. Leptin expression was analyzed in adipose tissue; Hsp90, GLUT4, and b 0,+ were analyzed in liver. The relative expression values (ratios of specific mRNA molecules:18S rRNA molecules) under Comfort or HS were: Hsp90, 0.025, 0.299; Glut4, 0.032, 0.070; b 0,+ , 2.983, 0.450; Leptin, 0.700, 0.066, respectively. Pigs under HS increased the expression of Hsp90 (P=0.004) and tended to increase GLUT4 (P=0.067) in liver, but reduced b 0,+ (P=0.011) in liver and leptin (P=0.007) in adipose tissue. These data indicate that pigs exposed to severe heat stress modify the expression of proteins involved in regulation of feed intake and nutrient metabolism.
