Stories and case studies are used to facilitate learning and understanding of conceptually difficult material. To this end, we investigated using well‐known children's literature to link past knowledge to new subject matter. Referencing a student's familiarity with one topic to teach a completely different topic may increase a student's ability to retain and understand material. To this end, lesson plans were created using The Mad Hatter, a key figure in The Adventures of Alice in Wonderland, for lessons on the physical properties, toxicology and biochemistry of mercury.
