The use of diagnostic ultrasound has become mainstream in the evaluation of musculoskeletal disorders. Correct interpretation of the images is paramount in the evaluation of musculoskeletal conditions. The purpose of this study was to compare the images obtained using diagnostic ultrasound to the actual tissues measured in preserved cadavers. Ten images were collected from a variety of anatomical sites including the hip, knee, plantar foot, Achilles tendon and shoulder. The thickness of tissues was measured on the images followed by dissection and measurement of the tissue thickness on the cadaver. The calculated thickness and the actual thickness were compared. The correlation between the calculated thickness and the measured thickness was r = .72. The results indicate a moderate to good relationship between the calculated and measured tissue thickness.
