Misfolded ER proteins are transported to the cytosol and degraded by the ubiquitin‐dependent proteasome machinery. Strikingly, this ER‐to‐cytosol transport pathway is co‐opted by pathogens such as viruses and toxins during entry. How pathogens hijack this pathway to enter host cells is poorly understood, and is the focus of our research.
