The isolation and characterization of neural stem cells in the adult brain offers considerable hope for the treatment of CNS injury and disease. I will discuss the fundamental biology of neural stem and progenitor cells in the adult brain and our work to date using small molecules to activate these endogenous neural precursor cells to effectively enhance “self‐repair” of the stroke injured brain.
