A 1‐year multidisciplinary lifestyle intervention improves cardiovascular disease risk profiles in at‐risk adults

The effectiveness of a comprehensive 1‐year lifestyle intervention (nutrition, physical activity, stress management) to reduce risk of cardiovascular (CVD) events was examined in 97 at‐risk adults. Each participant completed lung function, body composition (body weight, % fat, lean mass, fat mass, body mass index, waist circumference), biochemical (glucose, cholesterol [total, LDL, HDL]), and exercise stress test (maximal oxygen capacity, predicted VO2) measurements at baseline, 100 days, and 1 year. Repeated measures analysis of variance was used to evaluate effectiveness of the intervention. All parameters significantly improved from baseline to 100 days and from baseline to 1 year of treatment (p<0.05). However, only HDL improved from 100 days to 1 year (p<0.01). This multidisciplinary lifestyle intervention was effective in reducing CVD risk factors at both 100 days and 1 year. Future studies should examine how to increase program effectiveness after the initial 100 days.
