The regularity of breakfast could drive teenagers to consume more fruits and vegetables

Recently epidemic prevalence of obesity is a worldwide phenomenon and this trend induces much interests on the consumption pattern of plants which are dietary sources of fiber, vitamins and phytochemical in their eating environments. This study was conducted to identify fruits and vegetables intakes of teenagers according to regularity of breakfast. The subjects are total 354 middle school students(166 boys and 188 girls, average age 15 yrs old) in Changwon city located in the south area of Korea. The regular breakfast affected significantly teenagersˈ consumption of the friuts and vegetables(p<.001). The 57.9% of subjects skipped frequently breakfast for lack of time or appetite. They enjoyed a snack once or twice a day such as bread, noodles such as ramyeun, while those having breakfast regularly consumed friut or milk products. And also they frequently consumed korean cabbage and tomato. However there were no significant differences in most nutrient intakes according to regularity of eating breakfast. Interestingly the higher nutritional knowledge scores were, the better eating habits were. Therefore nutritional education on regularity of eating breakfat could drive teenagers to consume more fruits and vegetables and less cookies and fastfoods.
