The c‐terminal fragment of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH 22‐39) is a well‐known insulin secretagouge primarily associated with increased food intake. The present study investigated the effects of ACTH 22‐39 on food and water intake, ingestive and non‐ingestive behaviors, and glucose concentrations in chicks. In Experiment 1, ACTH 22‐39 increased food intake at all observation times through 180 min post injection but did not affect water intake or whole blood glucose concentration. Although ACTH 22‐39 is an insulin secretagouge, and insulin decreases glucose concentration, ACTH 22‐39 increased food intake which decreases insulin, which may account for the lack of a net effect on glucose concentration. In Experiment 2, anxio‐like behaviors were significantly increased following ACTH 22‐39 indicating a potential influence of ACTH 22‐39 in the stress response. These data may be used to develop future pharmacological treatments for obesity and anorexia.
