Changes in food intake and physical activity after oil discovery in Kuwait has lead to epidemics of obesity, diabetes and increased CVD. A National Nutrition Surveillance Survey was established in 1998 by the Ministry of Health to monitor changes in obesity prevalence based on data collected from health adults registering for employment and retirement. BMI was calculated on 39,141 men and women 20–75 yr for 1998–2009. Mean BMI of males increased from 27.0 to 28.8 (6.7% or 0.61%/yr) and of females from 27.6 to 29.4 (6.5% or 0.59%/yr). When examined by age decade all male groups increased, but only 20 yr old females. Regression analysis adjusting for age, education and employment indicated that year of study significantly contributed to BMI in males (β=.076)but less to females(β=.025), and was not a significant contributor for females older than 30 yr. This may indicate a recent increase in awareness of the health risks of obesity in women in Kuwait.
