Theoretical calculation of body composition changes after body mass reduction in humans

The energy content of adipose tissue (FAT) and lean body tissues (LB) are 7,600 kcal/kg and 1,100 kcal/kg, respectively in rats (Tai S et al. 2009). Theoretically, changes in the mass of FAT and LB after body mass (BM) reduction are able to be calculated by energy debt and BM loss during a BM reduction period. BM loss is the sum of the FAT loss and LB loss (equation 1), and energy loss is the sum of 7,600 kcal/kg x FAT loss and 1,100 kcal/kg x LB loss (equation 2). Therefore, combining the results of both calculations thereby gives the changes in the mass of FAT and LB after BM reduction. To examine whether the theoretical calculation corresponds to the measurements obtained using a bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA), food diaries (FD) and activities of daily living (ADL) during 16 to 30 day BM reduction periods were recorded in 3 female judoists. The estimated energy debt calculated by the FD and ADL to reduce 1 kg of BM was 9,248, 11,789 and 13,768 kcal, respectively, for the 3 subjects. After the BM reduction period, both the FAT and LB masses were decreased in the BIA measurement, while the FAT mass decreased but the LB mass increased in the calculation in the all 3 subjects. Therefore, no close correspondence was observed between the BIA measurement and the calculated values.
