Background The metabolic syndrome is precursor of diabetes and coronary heart disease. Previous studies have suggested that nut consumption leads to improvement in risk factors of the metabolic syndrome. Pistachio nuts are easily available and frequently consumed by general population. Objective To determine whether substituting 15% and 20% of the daily caloric intake in the form of pistachio nuts improves the risk factors of the metabolic syndrome among Asian Indians. Design Randomized case control design. Setting Outpatient dietary modification, counseling and blood analysis. Patients Sixty patients with the metabolic syndrome. Methods The intervention duration was of 24 weeks preceded by a diet and exercise run‐in period of 30 days. For initial 12 weeks subjects in case group were given basic diet plus pistachio nuts constituting 15% of daily calorie intake. Subsequently, dosage of pistachio was increased to 20% of the total calorie intake for another 12 weeks. Controls were given equi‐calorie, high fiber low fat diet. All the subjects in cases and controls were followed for 6 months. At the end of the study, comparative analysis was done between cases (who consumed pistachio nuts) and controls for anthropometry and measures of obesity, measures of glycemia, anti‐inflammatory markers and markers of oxidative stress. Results Results would be presented after analyzing the data. Conclusions Results are awaited.
