Previous studies have shown that Aged Garlic Extract (AGE) has a variety of health benefits, including modification of immune function. A randomized, double blind, placebo‐controlled intervention was completed by 112 healthy subjects, who consumed AGE or placebo for 12 wks, with a blood draw conducted at baseline and at 6 wks. Our main objective was to determine whether or not AGE modifies the activity of γδ T cells and NK cells, first line of immune defense. In addition, we measured the effect of AGE on the incidence and severity of illness over the 12 wk trial. Both γδ T cell and NK cell proliferation were enhanced by AGE supplementation. Lymphocytes from individuals who consumed AGE were less pro‐inflammatory than from those on placebo. Lymphocyte glutathione and S‐allyl cysteine were increased by AGE consumption. The overall incidence of illness was not different between the AGE and the placebo groups. However, the severity of illness was significantly reduced by AGE consumption as measured by total days of illness, total number of symptoms, a decrease in daily activity, and number of doctor visits reported. AGE has immunomodulating activity and can reduce the severity of colds and flu in humans. Funded by Wakunaga of America Co., Ltd.
