The aim was to assess the difference in diet and lifestyle that associate with cardiovascular health between 100 overweight established cardiovascular disease subjects (CVD group) and 100 overweight adults (control group) in Russia. CVD group was older than control group (53.8 ± 7.6 vs. 49.7 ± 6.2, p=0.0005). Significant difference in BMI (CVD 34.2 ± 9.4 vs. Control 27.5 ± 5.0), mean waist circumference (101.06 ± 25.2 vs. 87.28 ± 15.47) and WHR (0.96 ± 0.15 vs. 0.85 ± 0.12) were also found. Interestingly, only 10% of control subjects practiced physical activity whereas 3.5 times higher in CVD group. There were 2 times more smokers (24% vs. 13%) and 20% higher alcohol intake in CVD group (53% vs. 33%). 92% of CVD patients received drugs but only 2% of control subjects used any drugs (oral contraceptives). Control subjects indicated no vitamins or food additives used; however 23% of CVD patients reported the use during the preceded calendar year. Higher SFA and cholesterol and lower ω‐3 PUFA intake were found in CVD group. Surprisingly, carbohydrates intake was very close to recommended intake in both groups and in both sexes. Sodium intake in both groups was higher than recommendation, but much higher in CVD group (3194.4 vs 3819.8 mg). No difference in vitamin intake was found in both groups comparing with recommendation. Overall, CVD patients were poorly counseled for their diet, physical activity and lifestyle.
