Increase of plasma apolipoprotein A and decrease of live adipocyte size of high fat diet‐induced obese rats fed a tomato paste

Obesity induced by high fat diet (HFD) is a condition in which excess body fat has accumulated to the extent that it may have an adverse effect on health. This study aimed to investigate the effect of tomato paste (TP) on improving phospholipid, apolipoprotein A, B and adipocyte size from obesity associated with HFD in rat. Sprague‐Dawley rat fed with HFD for 10 weeks to induce obesity, HFD + 5% TP (5HFD), HFD + 10% TP (10HFD) or normal diet (ND) were used. The apolipoprotein A was significantly lower in the HFD compared with the 5HFD and 10HFD. The level of phospholipid and apolipoprotein B was downward tendency in the 5HFD and 10HFD. The adipocyte size of liver was increased in the HFD compared with the ND, however with the addition of tomato paste, it was decreased. Furthermore, abdominal adipose tissue and epididymis adipose tissue weights in 5HFD and 10HFD were significantly lower than those in HFD. As a result, rats fed the tomato paste indicated higher level of apolipoprotein A and gained less adipose tissue weight and size than those fed the high fat diets. These results suggest that the addition of tomato paste in the diet modulate adipose tissue size and lipid metabolism in high fat diet‐induced obesity.
