Helicobacter pylori ( H. pylori ) infection is a major cause of gastric inflammation and gastric carcinoma. Up‐regulations of inflammatory mediators such as IL‐1β, IL‐8, and iNOS have been shown in gastric mucosa of H. pylori ‐positive patient with gastric inflammation (gastritis, gastric ulcer). Korean red ginseng is one of the most popular traditional medicines in Korea by its stimulating effect in immune system and inhibition on inflammation. The present study aims to determine the effect of Korean red ginseng extract on H. pylori ‐induced expression of inflammatory mediators (IL‐1β, KC [IL‐8 homologue], iNOS) in gastric mucosa of Mongolian gerbil. As a result, water extract of Korean red ginseng inhibited H. pylori ‐induced expression of IL‐1β, KC and iNOS in gastric mucosa. H. pylori ‐induced phosphorylation of IκBα, which is essential for NF‐κB activation, in gastric mucosa was suppressed by Korean red ginseng treatment. In conclusion, Korean red ginseng may be beneficial for prevention and treatment of H. pylori ‐associated gastric inflammation. (We appreciate collaborative group of Dr. J‐H Cha, Yonsei University College of Dentistry, for support, handling, and inoculation of H. pylori to animals.
