The purpose of this cross‐sectional study was to investigate understanding and utilization of nutrition labeling in Korean middle school students. The subject was 690 middle school students living in Gimpo province, Korea and survey was conducted using a questionnaire. Data were analyzed with SPSS 12.0 program. As for main reason why the subjects check nutrition labeling, they answered they want to know the period of circulation, price, and food additives. As for reason why the subjects didn't check nutrition labeling, they answered ‘indifference in nutrition labeling’, ‘complication of the nutrition labeling contents', and ‘difficulty in understanding nutrition labeling’ in order. There was a significant difference in utilization of nutrition labeling between boy and girl students. In case of boy students, the main reason for checking nutrition labeling was for nutrition and in case of girl students for body weight control. Most of the subject didn't well understand nutrition labeling and didn't properly utilize it. Nevertheless, many students agreed that they should be taught about the education of nutrition labeling, and they also think that the promotion of nutrition labeling is necessary. Therefore, it may be suggested that constant education and promotion of nutrition labeling should be offered to Korean middle school students to build a right system in purchasing food products and to help them keep healthy dietary life.
