It has been reported that as women lose weight they may also lose bone mineral density (BMD) (g/cm2) and bone mineral content(BMC)(g). Objective This study placed 56 obese postmenopausal women on a dairy calcium diet to reduce body weight while maintaining BMC and BMD during a 3 month intervention. Methods The diet restricted subjects to a 1,400 kcal/d who were randomized to low calcium ~800 mg/d or high calcium ~1400 mg/d. At baseline subjects were 55.61±8.19 yrs.; weight 86.87±7.25 (kg); BMI of 32.55±6.12 (kg/m2); BMC 58.83±12.88 (g); BMD 1.05± .16 (g/cm2); and leptin 30.16±10.12 n/ml. Differences after 3 months in weight, BMI, leptin, BMD and BMC were analyzed. Correlations were calculated between Leptin with BMD (g/cm2) and BMC (g) before and after intervention. Results After the intervention there was a reduction in weight of −1.17±2.59 (kg), 95% CI:(−2.43, −1.02) (p ≤ .001); BMI: −.720±1.01, 95% CI:(−.995, −.444) (p ≤.001); leptin: −1.88±6.91, 95% CI:(−3.73, −.032) (p‐value=0.045). The average change in BMC: .016±1.38, 95% CI of (−.372, .404) (p=.935). BMD: .001±.020, 95% CI of (−.005, .007) (p=.738). Leptin was not correlated with BMD and BMC; .104 (p=.468) and .070 (p=.625) respectively. Conclusion After the intervention there was significant reduction in weight, BMI, and leptin and no significant change in BMC and BMD. There was no correlation between leptin, BMC and BMD.
